TOUR DURATION: 3hrs (Approx.)

Arthur Conan Doyle was born on the 22nd May 1859, the year Big Ben rang out its first chimes.  His father was Charles Altamont Doyle – a Victorian artist who suffered from epilepsy and alcoholism and was eventually institutionalized, dying in 1893.  His mother Mary Foley who married Charles in 1855 was an accomplished woman who provided for her family after Charles was no longer able to do so.

Arthur was a prolific writer with a very creative imagination, and the first mention of Sherlock Holmes appeared in the work A Study In Scarlet in Nov 1886. The Character of Sherlock Holmes developed from his knowledge and dealings with a university lecturer, Doctor Joseph Bell.

Doyle wrote to him, “It is most certainly to you that I owe Sherlock Holmes…round the center of deduction and inference and observation that I have heard you inculcate I have tried to build up a man”.
