Downton Abbey Tour

Downton-tour-pic

Departing London at a civilised hour we arrive at Highclere Castle, the setting for ” Downton Abbey “ in good time before all the crowds arrive. The present home was built by Sir Charles Barry and was his first commission after he had completed the exterior of the Houses of Parliament in London.

If you wish, we can line up for that classic “Downton” shot before we enter the castle itself. For those familiar with the transatlantic hit TV series the interior will be instantly recognisable with guides in each room on hand to help and answer any questions. As we’re one of the first people to arrive we’ll virtually have the home to ourselves. After browsing through the splendid gardens it will be time to leave as the big coach parties arrive.

Our tour takes us further north through the village of Shilton and its quaint stone footbridge as seen in the most recent series. Then we move on to Bampton where much of the TV series has been filmed. The village library was used as the cottage hospital and doctor’s surgery, Churchgate house was the Crawley’s family home, St. Mary’s was the church and further down the street the site of the old post office and the Grantham arms can be seen.

Then it will be time for lunch in the stunning southern Cotswolds which is now a National Park. Our lunch stop, the Swan in Swinsbrook ( it was here that Lady Sybil ‎planned her elopement with Branson, the chauffer) “the Swan was owned by the late Dowager Duchess of Devonshire. “Debo” as she was known was the youngest of six daughters of the 2nd Earl of Redesdale. She danced with JFK and had tea with Hitler. Her major passions in life were her chickens and her collection of Elvis memorablia.”. This award winning restaurant recently hosted the French president M. Francois Hollande on his visit to England as a guest of the British Prime Minister Mr David Cameron.

After lunch the choice is yours: maybe a relaxing drive through some of the southern Cotswolds towns and villages, a tour which takes in Blenheim Palace the birth place of Sir Winston Churchill and the church where he is buried, or a tour of Oxford and some of its splendid colleges. Whatever you decide this will be a day where you’ll be treated like a guest of Lord Grantham!
